Roxy and I want to recommend our favorite "dog friendly" trails, establishments and more.

Roxy’s hematoma and her diet

I started cooking for Roxy to reduce the risk of her developing a hematoma for a 2nd time. I had tried a variety of dry dog food but she was constantly scratching and shaking her ears. When she had a hematoma from shaking her ears so much, I knew something needed to change.

I had been reading a lot about diets and foods for my own health and decided to try a new diet for Roxy. She has gone about 7 years now without any hematomas or any of the severe ear shaking and scratching. There must have been something in dry dog food that really bothered her body.

I cook Roxy’s food a few times a week in batches. I usually feed her organic chicken or organic ground turkey with the normandy, frozen vegetable mix. Most grocery stores sell big bags of the Normandy frozen vegetable mix that is carrots, broccoli and cauliflower. I also add in rice or sweet potatoes when I have them available.

Cooking Chicken and Vegetables – When I cook chicken and vegetables, I put the chicken and frozen vegetables on a large baking sheet and roast them at 400 degrees. Once I pull the baking sheet out of the oven, I just cut everything up.

Cooking Ground Turkey and Vegetables – When I cook the ground turkey and frozen vegetables, I will steam the vegetables in a pan with a lid, then remove the vegetables and start chopping them as I add in the ground turkey to the pan to start cooking. Once the turkey is cooked, then I add the chopped vegetables back to the pan and mix it all together and add cooked rice if I have it ready.

Roxy has stayed within 2-3 lbs since she reached her adult weight. She has a soft and shiny coat and is a healthy girl.

I also give her bites of steak, salmon and other vegetables when I’m having them for myself or for special occasions. She also takes some vitamins and I buy her a variety of healthy treats.
